Heritage : Church listed as a historical monument from the 13th century.
Houeillès, a medieval village, is the gateway to the Landes de Gascogne forests.
Must-see: Its fortified Notre-Dame Church, listed as a historical monument from the 13th century. The feudal mounds of Larché and Jautan, along with traces of Iron Age burials. Labeyrie House, a half-timbered building.
To be discovered at the town hall: free exhibition by local painter Etienne MONDINEU 1872-1940. A pitching jar discovered by Houeillès D.E.F.C.L. firefighters in 1998 at the bottom of the Lagüe de Houeillès pond. The jar dates back to the 19th century, and came from a potters’ workshop in Cognac, on the banks of the Charente. It was donated to the town hall by its discoverers Hugues DAVID, Philippe MAITE, Eric PLANA and Luc REGLAT.
History of the ’40s war: A Resistance stronghold, Houeillès was one of the first villages in France to be bombed by the Germans in 1944. Numerous memorial steles and streets bear the names of those executed by firing squad.
